UKHO Switches on Digital List of Lights

The UK Hydrographic Office has launched the latest addition to its expanding digital products range. The Admiralty Digital List of Lights is aimed primarily at the SOLAS commercial shipping sector and provides information on over 70,000 navigational lights throughout the world. It builds on earlier digital trials covering UK waters introduced last year.

Designed to meet SOLAS carriage requirements, the Admiralty Digital List of Lights provides complete global coverage on one CD. An interactive chart-based interface accompanies the familiar tabular list format and information on any navigational light can be quickly retrieved in a single click of the mouse. The product is split into nine geographical areas that can be accessed using unique license codes. Locating lights is made even easier with the inclusion of a powerful search function.

The interface allows for several dynamic uses of the lights information in any given area.

Light properties such as position, light characteristics and elevation can be called up quickly and the graphic representation makes even complex sectors simple to understand. Navigators are also able to add their own temporary notes to individual lights within the package.

A unique 'View From Here' function enables the user to click anywhere on the chart to call up a complete 360º scrolling view of any lights within a given range.

Everything from a light's name and position to its elevation and colour of structure is available, making this function extremely useful when approaching unfamiliar coastlines.

In addition to the advantage of a digital interface, the Admiralty Digital List of Lights offers several methods of updating. The UKHO issues weekly updates as part of the subscription service that can be applied in a matter of seconds via CD, email or web download.
