Pollution Control

Puerto Rican Pollution Prevention

Titan Maritime successfully refloated the M/V Kent Reliant at San Juan Harbour in Puerto Rico last month at the end of a 13 day salvage and response operation. The 522ft cargo ship had grounded just outside the harbour, raising fears of pollution damage to environmentally sensitive areas.

Titan Maritime removed most of the fuel oil from the vessel and oil containment booms were pre-staged to ensure minimal impact on the marine environment. The stricken vessel was then lightered to make it possible for it be safely pulled from its grounded position.

Working in coordination with the US Coast Guard, Titan's careful response helped to ensure that no pollution was released from the vessel throughout the salvage operation.

After being refloated, Kent Reliant was taken approximately one mile offshore for an initial evaluation. Once the vessel had been stabilised and it was determined that it posed no further threat of pollution, it was towed to Anchorage E where it was given an underwater examination.

Following this it was towed to Pier 15 for cargo offload and then to Pier 13 for a final evaluation by the US Coast Guard before being allowed to depart the port.
