The latest vessel in Northlink's service for mainland Scotland and the Orkney Isles is the Hamnavoe , a 110m long, 600 passenger ferry which has been equipped with two 9 M32C main engines, each delivering 4,320kW at 600rpm.

The vessel will provide a daily commuter service from mainland Scotland to the Orkney Isles, Scrabster and Stromness.

Two other ferries, the Hrossy and the Hjataland , entered service in October 2002 operating daily out of Aberdeen to Lerwick in the Shetland Isles. Both these vessels have four 6 M43 main engines, each delivering 5,400kW at 500rpm, and two 8M20 gensets, each producing 1,520kW at 1,000rpm. All the engines run on heavy fuel oil and collectively generate 57.28MW of power.

The three vessels were designed and constructed by Aker Finnyards at Rauma in Finland.

Finning (UK), the sole distributor of MaK engines and gensets for the UK and Ireland, is providing operator Caledonian MacBrayne with a back-up package which includes servicing, sea trialing and scheduled oil sampling.
