Trials Expand for New ECDIS Service
01 Sep 2003
Shell has become the ninth large international shipping company to join sea trials of the new Admiralty ECDIS Service ahead of its official launch in the autumn. The service, developed by the UK Hydrographic Office to provide official electronic chart coverage on a global scale, combines Electronic Navigation Charts (ENCs) and Admiralty Raster Charts (ARCS) in a single package. The trials are being conducted to test and prove all aspects of<$>the service.
PC Maritime’s Navmaster system with ENC and ARCS charts was installed on board Shell’s 22,000dwt oil tanker MV Cardissa during a recent stay in Rotterdam. The route planning version of PC Maritime’s Navmaster system has been specified for Shell’s international fleet since 1997 to help comply with the ISM Code. The ARCS/ ENC trail on MV Cardissa allows Shell to evaluate the quality and effectiveness of the latest electronic chart and update supply system.
The Admiralty ECDIS Service has been designed to assist shipping companies seeking to minimise risk, reduce paper charts and meet IMO electronic charting<$>regulations. The service will also boost operational efficiency via flexible route planning and automatic chart updating. UKHO will automatically replace ARCS charts with the new ENCs as they become available, at no additional cost to the shipping company.
