Dubai Double for Dutch Dredgers
01 Sep 2003
The phenomenal sold-out success of Jumeirah Palm Island off the coast of Dubai has led to a second major land reclamation project for the Netherlands' Van Oord ACZ .The dredging and marine contractors, in co-operation with another major Dutch dredging group, Ballast Ham Dredging , have now landed a 200m contract to create the land for Globe Island , agroup of separate islands representing all the continents in the world.
Palm Island, a land reclamation project in the shape of a vast, multi-frond palm tree has drawn international attention as the visionary United Arab Emirates seek to secure a future as a tourism, exhibition and conference destination after the oil revenues have peaked.
Plots on the luxury development have been snapped up by the world's wealthy, including celebrities such as Madonna and David Beckham.
Hence the go-ahead for Globe Island, an oval shaped group of islands spanning an area measuring 4 by 6 km and requiring some 125 million m 3of sand and 13 million tonnes of rock to construct. Despite the scale of the project, completion within 24 months is promised.
As with Palm Island, sand will be dredged from nearby offshore winning areas by a fleet of trailing suction hopper dredgers with individual capacities ranging up to 20,000 m 3. The rock will be delivered on large barges and put in place using side stone dumping vessels, split barges and floating cranes.
