Complete Power packages for Ukraine Tugs

Volvo Penta has delivered 34 diesel engines for tugboat installations in the Ukraine since May of 2001. The latest delivery to this increasingly important market was for the tug 814 Bakai, launched last November from one of Europe’s largest shipyards, Chernomorskiy Shipbuilding at Nikolaev.

The 31.6m LOA Bakai is the fifth in a series of tugs built in Ukraine for local port authorities. It will be used by Kherson Trade Sea Port, the state company responsible for operating in several ports in the mouth of the River Dnipro and in the Black Sea area. Similar to its four sister ships, Bakai can be used for towing, firefighting and icebreaking.

The propulsion engines are twin Volvo Penta D65A MTs, each of 1,380kW to generate a bollard pull of over 47 tonnes and a top speed of 12 knots without tow. The 16 cylinder, 65 litre D65A MT marine diesel is equipped with both turbo and intercooler, achieving maximum capacity at a torquey 1,650rpm for characteristics well suited to tug use.

The gensets on board the Ukraine tugs are driven by twin Volvo Penta TAMD74A units, each with 90 kw, and the fire pump is powered by a 228kW Volvo Penta TAMD63L.

Aleksandr Chumachenko, President of Feodosia Trade Sea Port which owns two of the Volvo Penta engined tugs, said ‘Volvo Penta has delivered complete engine rooms for our vessels, which has been a great advantage to us. ‘The engines have more than met our expectations and we have also received good service and support from Volvo Penta’s local organisation in Ukraine.’
