MTU Power for Fast Ferry

The new fast ferry for Spanish operator Fred Olsen will be driven by four 20V 8000 engines from MTU Friedrichshafen. The 126m long trimaran will be built at the Austal shipyard in Australia for delivery in the second half of this year.

The vessel will accommodate 1,350 passengers and 340 cars over 400 lane/metres. Fred Olsen operates four fast ferries and one conventional ferry which currently transport almost three million passengers, 500,000 cars and 250,000 trucks each year on five routes around the Canary Islands.

The four 20 cylinder 20V 8000 engines, MTU’s most powerful diesel engine, will provide a total power of 32,800kW. This can be increased as the transport volume grows on the routes planned. Power is transmitted via waterjets to achieve a service speed of over 40 knots. In addition to the main drive systems, MTU is also<$>supplying four on board gensets based on 8 cylinder versions of the 2000 series, each with 385kW and a comprehensive servicing package.
