DEC to Clean up Swedish Lakes
01 Apr 2004
DEME Environmental Contractors (DEC) and Dredging International (DI) have received a contract for the design and execution of an important remediation project at two lakes near the city of Hultsfred in Sweden.
The contract was awarded after a lengthy Europe-wide tender and negotiation procedure. The value of the remediation contract is over 10m. DEC and DI are subsidiaries of Belgian DEME-Group, one of the leading contractors world-wide in the fields of dredging, environmental and hydraulic engineering.
The numerous lakes and forests together make up an important environmental asset for Sweden. However, the wood industry and<$>the paper manufacturing business in particular have caused a considerable pollution at the floor of the lakes - a consequence of uncontrolled discharge and dumping. In particular, unacceptable amounts of mercury have been observed. In total, DEC and DI will remove some 200,000m3 of contaminated silt, in a most professional and selective manner. Special dredging techniques will be applied, preventing polluted sediments to contaminate the water.
After the dredging, sediments will be pumped up and pressed to a confined landfill site through closed pipes. A system of geotubes will be used to contain the silt from the surrounding soil.
They have a diameter of several meters and are 50-100m long.
Water from the ewatering process will be treated before being discharged. Current Swedish environmental legislation will apply for permitting, constructing and capping of the landfill, after treating and stabilization of the sediments.
Completing the whole project will take three years, and is not expected to be finished before 2007 due to severe winters that restrict local operations to eight months a year.
