Derecktor's Fast Ferry Speeds to Alaska

M/V Fairweather , the 73m LOA high speed vehicle/passenger ferry built by Derecktor Shipyards in Connecticut USA, has concluded sea trials and made an 8,500 mile delivery voyage to its home port of Juneau, where it will commence service for the Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) next month.

During acceptance trails the quad water-jet driven aluminium catamaran designed by BMT Nigel Gee and Associates of Southampton UK exceeded all contractual performance targets, achieving a light-ship speed of 42.5 knots the very first time under way. A service speed of 36 knots was achieved with a payload equivalent to 30 vehicles and 250 passengers.

A 10 person crew delivered the vessel, along with representatives of AMHS, Derecktor, and the engine and water jet manufacturers, MTU and Kamewa respectively.

As the first high speed ferry for the state, Fairweather represents a significant step forward for Alaska's waterborne commerce, transportation and travel.

Operating at twice the speed of existing conventional vessels, it will help to bring Alaskan communities closer together, while greatly facilitating business links and vital services.
