Armon to Build New Spanish Emergency Towing Vessels

Spain's maritime rescue authority, Sociedad de Salvamento y Seguridad Maritima (Sasemar), has placed an order valued at ? 29.5m with Vigo-based shipyard Astilleros Armon for two salvage tugs. The vessels will be 56m long, with a beam of 15m, and equipped to carry out the duties of Emergency Towing Vessels (ETVs), including a wide range of towage, rescue, fire fighting and anti-pollution operations.
Virtually identical, the azimuthing stern drive vessels will be powered by two MAK 8M32 C main engines generating a total of 10,434bhp, to achieve a predicted bollard pull of 124 tonnes. Fire fighting equipment will meet the requirements of FiFi 1 and skimmers will be carried for oil recovery. Dedicated integral tanks are to be capable of storing 293m 3of recovered oil residue. Accommodation is planned for up to twelve persons.
Delivery of the first vessel, to be based in Galicia, is due during the first half of 2005 and the second tug five months later.
Sasemar - the Society of Rescue and Marine Security is the organisation responsible for the search and rescue services and the environmental protection of the Spanish coastline. The organisation is responsible for a geographic area of approximately, 1,500,000km 2.
