  • Spill Responsibility for Iran's New Dredger

    The launch and naming ceremony took place last month at IHC Holland 'sKinderdijk yard of the 1,000m 3trailing suction hopper dredger Yasin for Ports & Shipping Organisation (PSO), the port authority of the Islamic Republic of Iran. 

  • IHC Caland to Sell Shipbuilding

    Holland's IHC Caland group is divesting from its shipbuilding activities by proceeding with the sale of its IHC Holland and Merwede shipyards. The yards have been responsible for producing the majority of the world's dredgers over recent decades. 

  • VOSTA LMG's Iranian Success

    Amsterdam based VOSTA LMG has had a recent run of success supplying the engineering and dredging equipment packages for cutter suction dredgers which will be or have been built in Iran.

  • New Valeport Tide Gauge

    Among new developments on show at seawork was Midas TMS from Valeport , which the Totnes-based company claims to represent an evolution in the field of tide gauges and environmental monitoring stations. 

  • Low-cost Chart Planner

    WinChart Planner , an entry-level chart plotting programme costing just £99, was one of a number of new developments featured by Chartwork which specialises in developing navigational software for fishing, leisure and commercial vessels from bases in Portsmouth and Norway. The suite, says Director Tim Lovegrove, can run on either a laptop/PC or a Compaq iPAQ using C-Map NT+ charts. It can also be connected to any GPS unit transmitting data in an NMEA 0183 format. 

  • Brighton Hypack Seminar

    Del Norte Technology of Swindon announced at seawork a three-day joint seminar with Hypack Inc in Brighton from 25-28 October. 

  • Ilex Harbour Survey Package

    More software developments, this time from Ilex Computing of Great Yarmouth with their HarbourMan suite designed to allow port and harbour authorities to carry out bathymetric surveys at minimal cost.

  • Many Dams Likely to Need Dredging Says Dutch Firm

    Hydroconsult in The Netherlands has drawn attention to the fact that 20 per cent of the world's electricity is generated by dams, and that many of the dams in question are silting up and will require dredging. 

  • New Plans Unveiled for 'Yorkshire Marina'

    Revised plans for a £35 million Yorkshire Marina at Bridlington on the northeast coast of the UK were unveiled in July.

    Following on from projects recently awarded to Jan De Nul in the Sakhalin area of Russia, the Middle East, and Mauritius, the company has announced that it has also won new projects in the North Sea and Argentina recently.

    Mott MacDonald, together with Libyan consultants National Consulting Bureau , have been appointed by the People's Committee of Sirt Municipality in Libya to plan and design an expansion to the port at Sirte, a town located about 460 km east of Tripoli.

    British contractor Costain has provided details of the work it is carrying out at West Bay in Dorset in the UK reconstructing the harbour in order to make it viable for use throughout the year.

  • Oil Monitoring Maintains Onboard Performance

    Condition monitoring of fuels and lubricants used onboard has become one of the main weapons in the fight to reduce premature failure of marine propulsion units, gearboxes and hydraulic systems. In particular, determining the presence of water or the gradual degradation of TBN (Total Base Number) of the engine oil can be one of the first indicators of potentially expensive and possibly catastrophic failure of the plant.

    A new generation of programmable displays from TeleflexMorse is helping marine engine supplier Volvo Penta to evolve its electronic vessel control (EVC) system.

  • UK Government Boost for Marine Renewables

    The British Government has trebled its marine research development fund for wave and tidal energy technology. The £50 million allocation from the Department of Trade and Industry is intended to encourage investment in a marine sector where Britain has the potential to lead the world. 

  • Norsafe and Sound at seawork

    Norway's Norsafe AS made its debut at seawork 2004 with a version of its Mako 655 fast rescue boat receiving considerable attention on the floating pontoon. Building lifeboats for more than 100 years, Norsafe has put more than 15,000 such craft into service, with its current range including rescue boats, freefall lifeboats and conventional lifeboats up to a 90 person capacity totally enclosed model. 

  • London's Mayor Lauds Thames Yard Expansion

    With the arrival of its new dry dock, Thames Craft Dry Docking Services Ltd (Thames Craft) is able to take larger vessels and pontoons out of the water for regular maintenance and emergency repairs. The new dry dock, which is securely anchored on the river bed to provide safe deep water berthing, is 58.5m long and 14.5m wide and is capable of lifting approximately 1600 tonnes. 

  • More Moore Stephens

    Shipping accountant and business consultant Moore Stephens has expanded its specialised shipping presence in the UK by opening an office in the maritime centre of Southampton. 

  • Mersey Waterfront Is World Heritage Site

    The Port of Liverpool has been added to an illustrious list which includes the Taj Mahal, Stonehenge, the Great Barrier Reef, and the Great Wall of China after its bid to become a World Heritage Site was approved by the United Nations. Liverpool's waterfront site, including the famous Pier Head and historic docks, reflects the city's significance as a port as well as its maritime and architectural heritage.

  • Ignorance Risks Lives, Says MCA's Survey

    A survey undertaken by the UK's Maritime & Coastguard Agency has revealed that nearly half of all parents (49%) do not know that the Coastguard is an emergency service and can be called by dialing 999 as for the Police, Fire Brigade or Ambulance Service. 

  • New Port Services Joint Venture Launched for South Wales

    Two UK port services companies, one in west Wales and one in Southampton, signed an agreement this month to form a new joint company. The Milford Docks Company , part of the Milford Haven Port Authority Group , and Williams Shipping have entered into the joint venture which will create considerable opportunities to develop new business within the marine and port services sector in South Wales.

    Bankrupt German small ship yard Cassens Werft has been given a new lease of life following investment by business partners and is now building three 700 TEU container feeders. 

  • Holyhead Marine Raids Key Military Boatbuilding Contract

    The UK Ministry of Defence has awarded a contract to Holyhead Marine Services to construct the replacement Offshore Raiding Craft (ORC) for the Royal Marines . The contract has been issued for the construction of a one-off prototype vessel by the yard with options for further vessels.

  • UK Government 'Complacent' on Oil Spill Planning

    The UK's 10,000 mile-long coastline is under threat from oil spills due to outdated local authority contingency plans, according to a paper released last month by the Environmental Industries Commission (EIC). 

  • 'Royal Oak' Oil Removal Continues

    A major operation to remove oil from the wreck of HMS Royal Oak continues this summer. The warship was torpedoed by a German U-boat in 1939 while lying at anchor off Scapa Flow.

    Cosalt Safety & Protection hassecured a £700,000 contract with A&P Tyne to install the fire safety systems on board the world's largest non-governmental hospital ship, the Africa Mercy . 

  • New Trainers Take to the Waves

    Sea Training International.  The Sea Training International centre has the facility and staff to cater for specialist agencies, companies or individuals requiring specialist training in all aspects of fast offshore rescue, sea survival, VHF/GMDSS radio training, and all levels of power boat training. The centre also is the only establishment in Wales to offer offshore intense medical training to STCW 95 regulations and also claims to be the only centre in Wales to offer training on fully operational commercial Delta Rigid Inflatable Boats up to 33ft in length. 

  • Sir Jock Slater is the New RNLI Chairman

    The UK's Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) has named former First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Sir Jock Slater as its new Chairman. Sir Jock has been appointed following the retirement of Peter Nicholson CBE, who has served as Chairman since July 2000. 

  • Icom's Support for St Dunstan's Builds Blind Faith At Sea

    Kent based Icom (UK) Ltd aresponsoring a training package for St Dunstan's, the charity that provides lifelong care for blinded ex-servicemen and women. The sponsorship package is going towards VHF radio training and Powerboat Level 2 training for the charity's staff and a team of volunteers for its RIB Ad Astra .

  • Ali-it Surveys seawork Success

    seawork2004 proved another successful show for Pembrokeshire based aluminium boatbuilders Ali-itmarine Ltd . The company's spectacular Shockwave thrill ride boat was a hot ticket for regular outings from the seawork floating pontoon while on the new business side, Ali-it took orders for another two 14.5m shaft driven catamarans for UK customers and a 21m long, 120 passenger ferry for an operator in Ireland.

    MJ had the good fortune to be on board when Carl Parke took the controls of his new 10m Patrol Boat for the first time at seawork2004 .

    Record numbers of visitors attended seawork2004 , including those from the USA, Australasia, the Middle East, North Africa and Europe. This, despite abnormal gale force winds and rain, served as testament to the solid and ever ascending stature of both the commercial marine exhibition and its concurrent conference.

  • More Vessels Ordered by Smit

    Smit Transport & Heavy Lift BV has exercised an option to build a further offshore support vessel at the Keppel Singmarine shipyard in Singapore. The original contract was placed with Keppel in March of this year for two 70-tonnes bollard pull anchor-handling tug/supply (AHTS) vessels ( Maritime Journal April 2004).

  • Dutch Partner - Delivered in Record Time

    Dutch tug owner Engelsman Towage & Salvage of Makkum has taken delivery of the multi-purpose coastal and contracting tug Dutch Partner , just five months after the order was signed. This attractive twin-screw tug vessel is the fourth of a series of sister-ships constructed by Kooiman Shipyards at Zwijndrecht for Dutch operators.

  • Wings on the River Dee

    Earlier this year one of the most specialised transport vessels ever to enter service on Britain's waterways commenced operation in North Wales. Named Afon Dyfrdwy and operated by the Holyhead Towing Company Ltd the vessel has the vital task of transporting aircraft wings from the Airbus factory at Broughton near Chester to the Port of Mostyn for onward shipping to Toulouse in France.

  • Cattewater Harbour Commissioners Meet Their 'Maker'

    The second new vessel this year for Cattewater Harbour Commissioners of Plymouth attended seawork2004 on its delivery voyage from the Great Yarmouth UK based boatbuilders Goodchild Marine Services Ltd . Following on the heels of Cattewater's twin screw tug Prince Rock (see MJ January 2004), Maker is a first of type Lochin 366 pilot launch built to a double chine hull form designed by Amgram Ltd for Lochin Marine International .
