Low-cost Chart Planner
01 Aug 2004
WinChart Planner , an entry-level chart plotting programme costing just £99, was one of a number of new developments featured by Chartwork which specialises in developing navigational software for fishing, leisure and commercial vessels from bases in Portsmouth and Norway. The suite, says Director Tim Lovegrove, can run on either a laptop/PC or a Compaq iPAQ using C-Map NT+ charts. It can also be connected to any GPS unit transmitting data in an NMEA 0183 format.
Software, comprising a manual and NT+/PC charts, is supplied on a CD-ROM. Parameters covered include vessel position, track logs, routes and waypoints, range and bearing, tidal heights, cross track error, autopilot output, and port and marina information.
Routes can also be created on a PC for downloading to an iPAQ.
Other Chartwork software on show included WinChart Pilot developed for commercial pilotage and combining an advanced plotter with a facility to utilise AIS data, and WinChart Nexus for more sophisticated display functions. Designed primarily for fishing operations, the latter features advanced 3D display technology for enhanced skipper awareness of any potential navigation dangers as well as routeing options. Displays are constructed from spot depths and contours detailed in C-Map high quality vector charts.
