New Plans Unveiled for 'Yorkshire Marina'

Revised plans for a £35 million Yorkshire Marina at Bridlington on the northeast coast of the UK were unveiled in July.

The original plans for the Yorkshire marina at Bridlington were rejected on environmental grounds.

The new plan replaces a scheme rejected almost 12 months ago, and follows the production of a proposal for a somewhat smaller £10 million marina drawn up by the Harbour Commissioners at Bridlington.

The latest plan provides for a 500-berth marina, approximately half the size of the original £60 million project and would have less effect on the town's beach than the earlier proposals, which were rejected on environmental grounds, and unlike the previous proposal - which was thrown out following a public inquiry last August - the new plan incorporates the existing harbour.

The plan also involves reclaiming 12 acres of land around the existing harbour, which could be used for a mixed use development. The Harbour Commissioners, one of the principal objectors to the first scheme, will be asked to run the 'wet side' operations. A public consultation on the new plans will take place in September.

Since the first plan was rejected last August, the Council has remained committed to the regeneration of Bridlington and has worked alongside the Bridlington Regeneration Partnership (BRP) to review options available. A Public Meeting was held last September, and the Council's Cabinet received a report on the Government's decision in October, setting out the implications of the decision, the regeneration needs of Bridlington and the revised Integrated Development Plan (IDP) that had been put forward by the BRP.

The Cabinet undertook to review of all of the regeneration ideas for Bridlington, to establish the best proposal that could bring about much needed economic improvements in the town.
