  • 'Redeemer' Adds Diving to Activities List

    Seeing what at first appears to be a modern sport fisherman with an Effer knuckle boom crane mounted to port amidships makes the viewer wonder how big a fish the crew is after. However, appearances can be deceiving and Falmouth UK based Bay Marine 's 37' vessel Redeemer is in fact a thoughtfully developed multi-purpose workboat which is proving itself with the local commercial marine community. 

  • Nearshore Project for New Pipe Tracker

    The ShengLi Oilfield has purchased two advanced TSS440 pipe trackers for use with its new pipelay plough. The two pipe trackers have been supplied by UK company VT TSS Ltd and fitted to the front and rear of the tracked plough. Designed and built by ShengLi Oilfield engineers, the plough is capable of burying pipe up to 90cm in diameter at depths to 2m and is being used to support construction and survey activities in offshore China. 

  • Force Be With You Underwater

    Force Dredging Systems (FDS) has recently completed a successful hire contract in the Caspian Sea which involved clearing drill mud cuttings and debris away from the base of a production jacket and placing them in a specified dumpsite some 60m to 80m away. Once FDS' Superstream Dredging System had cleared the cuttings and debris, it was quickly reconfigured on site to undertake seabed trenching for a new riser installation.

    The Southampton Institute is to stage a third Swathe Bathymetry seminar on multibeam and other sounding methods, at its Sir James Matthews Conference Centre from 18-19 January.

    Aberdeen-based Veripos has extended its dual-frequency satellite-delivered Differential GPS service for offshore users in Asia-Pacific regions with establishment of new operational facilities in Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.

    The Port of Bristol has completed installation of a Reson SeaBat 8101 multibeam echosounder on its survey vessel, Isambard Brunel .

  • Costain Completes Work at Felixstowe

    The Port of Felixstowe in the UK has celebrated the official opening of a 270m extension to its Trinity Terminal , known as Trinity III 2 , which was built by Costain Marine . 

  • Outer Bristol Channel Could be New Aggregates Source

    A three-year study which is due to be completed in March 2006 is being used to determine whether the waters of the Outer Bristol Channel in the UK are an area that may have marine aggregate resource potential in the future, Maritime Journal has learned. 

  • £100m Marina Plans for Yarmouth

    Plans for a marina at Yarmouth in the UK which could cost as much as £100m could be submitted to the borough council in February of 2005. 

  • OSIL Designs Innovative Sediment Transport Solution

    BMM Meetdienst in Belgium has chosen OSIL to provide a high-tech sediment transport measurement solution. The system will be used to measure sediment direction and currents off the coast of Belgium in the North Sea. 

  • Flood Scheme to Cost €35m

    Work on a 35m flood relief scheme for Clonmel in Ireland will start early next year, the Minister of State at the Department of Finance, Mr Tom Parlon said recently during a visit to the town. 

  • Royal Haskoning Commissioned to Supervise Technical Work on Russian Storm Surge Barrier

    St Petersburg in Russia repeatedly has to contend with serious flooding, and in October 2004 consultants Royal Haskoning were commissioned to supervise the technical work on a storm surge barrier that will prevent flooding in the future.

  • Management Information Added to Cork VTS

    Bremen-based Atlas Elektronik is to extend Cord Harbour Authority's VTS network with the addition of an all-purpose Management Information System (MIS) facilitating overall port management and traffic control as well as general administration. 

  • New VTS for Port of Londonderry

    Transas Marine UK Ltd , in cooperation with Joss Skelton Ltd (Belfast), recently secured an order for a Vessel Traffic Services system to be installed in Northern Ireland's Port of Londonderry. Similar systems are already installed in the UK at the ports of Larne, Cardiff, Swansea, Barry, Port Talbot, Newport, Tyne, Aberdeen, Bristol (Svitzer Marine), Peterhead and Poole. 

  • Saab Launches On Course at Hamburg

    Saab TransponderTech was a notable presence at the recent SMM exhibition in Hamburg, introducing a new DGPS Navigator meeting the latest IMO and IEC specifications, including Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring (RAIM), as well as a new type-approved GPS as an integrated part of the R4 ship AIS transponder system.

    Thamesport (London) Ltd has introduced a fourth train operating company, Direct Rail Services , which will operate a full daily service to Daventry from the Medway based container port. 

  • Ports Hunger for Feeders

    A new report from Netherlands based shipping consultancy Dynamar says the shortsea feeder trade is an important part of an integral port network. Efficient feeder links act as a catalyst to the growth of containerisation and hence play an important role in growing business volumes. Transhipment cargo, in addition to hinterland cargo, is attractive to mainline carriers and thus promotes port use overall. 

  • Tall Oil Tales in Yorkshire

    Rix Shipping 's coastal tanker RixHawk recently became the first vessel since the early 1990s to discharge at the UK's Drax Power Station on the River Ouse between Goole and Selby. 

  • MARPOL Revisions Adopted

    Revised regulations to prevent marine pollution by ships carrying oil or chemicals have been adopted by the Marine Environment Protection Committee of the IMO .The revised MARPOL Annex 1 isexpected to enter force on 1 January 2007, incorporated the various amendments adopted since MARPOL entered into force in 1983. These include the phasing in of double hull tankers, a separation of construction and equipment provisions from operational requirements, and clear distinction between requirements for newbuilds and existing vessels. 

  • 'Maria S Merian' Readies for Action

    Shaping up to enter service in January 2005 in waters as far north as the Arctic fringes is the research vessel Maria S Merian , being completed at Kroeger Werft near Rendsburg for delivery to German authorities. 

  • 2nd Sea and Water Conference

    The second annual Sea and Water Conference will be held in Hull UK on 1 March 2005. The event will include a full day's conference, a dinner and a tour of local water freight facilities. Agreement has been reached for a senior government minister to deliver the keynote speech for an event sponsored by Associated British Ports and the Humber Trade Zone. 

  • Fast Travel to London Boat Show

    With the London Boat Show returning to the ExCel Exhibition Centre on 6-16 January, visitors wishing to get into a maritime mood en-route can travel to the event by high speed catamaran and shuttle coach from six central London piers. The ExCel Express , operated by Thames Clippers, will be boarding passengers at Waterloo, Savoy, Blackfriars, Bankside, London Bridge and St Katharine's Dock Piers. 

  • Port of London Raises Historic Elizabethan Remains

    The Port of London Authority (PLA) has successfully recovered significant sections of a late 16th Century vessel from the Thames Estuary. Working closely with experts from Wessex Archaeology the Marine Services Department of the PLA has raised a portion of the bow, part of the side of the Tudor vessel and a number of artefacts.

    Two British companies travelled to Rotterdam Maritime last month to complete the sale of two Daewoo marine engines by South Devon based WaterMota Ltd to Williams Marine & Port Services Ltd ofPembroke Port in Wales. The eight cylinder, 15 litre Daewoo V158TIH engines will re-power Williams' 19m Multi-cat type vessel Seahorse as part of a complete refit for the workboat. 

  • Port of Koper Coping Better

    The Slovenian Port of Koper , which receives some 2,000 ship calls per year, has installed a Transas AIS Network System procured by the Slovenian Maritime Directorate . The new system covers the whole of the Slovenian coastline and helps operators to observe the traffic situation not only within the port area but across the country's entire territorial waters as well. 

  • UMC Goes Into Hull Cleaning

    UMC International Plc have decided to launch a range of hull cleaning equipment based on the huge global interest shown in their Mini Pamper hull cleaning machine, which features technology adapted to underwater cleaning. Its advanced cleaning mechanism has scrub pressure control, allowing the diver to ensure only the required amount of pressure is used based on the marine fouling encountered and the type of paint. 

  • Barcelona Sees Shortsea Future

    The Spanish Port of Barcelona is focusing on growing shortsea traffic and has allocated part of its ongoing expansion for a dedicated terminal to accommodate the sector. Port authority chairman Joaquim Coello told a recent shortsea conference in Barcelona that the creation of new port capacity, alongside economic and strategic considerations such as cooperation and training, enabled him to forsee the creation of a dedicated shortsea terminal. 

  • QE2's Longest Voyage

    In recently completing 35 years, six months and three days in service, Cunard 's Queen Elizabeth 2 has become the longest serving liner in the company's history, surpassing the Aquitania . The vessel has covered more than 5 million nautical miles, equivalent to sailing around the world 230 times, and has carried nearly 3 million passengers. Costing £29 million to build in the 1960s, Cunard has subsequently spent 15 times that amount on refits, refurbishing and re-engining a vessel which is expected to remain in service for many more years. 

  • Talks Underway on More German SWATH Boats

    Abeking & Rasmussen hasreported it is in 'intensive negotiations' about further repeat orders for small SWATH pilot tenders after delivering the 25.65m long Wangeroog to German waterway and shipping administration (WSV) authorities.

  • RNLI Lifeboat Woman Awarded Gallantry Medal

    The RNLI has announced that Porthcawl helmsman Aileen Jones is to be awarded the Institution's Bronze Medal for Gallantry for her part in the rescue of two fishermen on August 24, 2004. Aileen is the first lifeboat woman in 116 years to be given such an accolade, the last medal awarded to a woman crew member was in 1888.

    The Public Inquiry is underway into the proposed reconfiguration of the southern part of the UK Port of Felixstowe . The proposal involves the conversion of an area previously used by P&O North Sea Ferries at Landguard Terminal and the now largely redundant Dock Basin into a new deep water container terminal.

  • Flexifloat's Largest Pontoon Completed

    Flexifloat Systems BV ofRotterdam has finalised the construction of a new self elevating platform with 48in diameter spuds and a deckload of approximately 400 metric tons. The platform's modular construction makes transport easy and global deployment possible. Once on site, the platform can be assembled in no more than three days. 

  • 'Buddy' for Waterways Clearance

    The River Tyne Clean-Up Project , led by the Port of Tyne in the UK, have selected the new generation Buddy workboat from the Liverpool Water Witch Marine & Engineering Company to provide a supporting role in their debris clearing operation. 

  • General Lighthouse Authorities Order Newbuilds

    Trinity House and the Northern Lighthouse Board , two of the three General Lighthouse Authorities of the UK and Ireland, have reached agreement with the Gdansk Stocznia Remontowa yard in Poland to build two 82m Multi-Function Tenders (MFTs), one for each GLA, and one 35m Rapid Intervention Vessel (RIV) for Trinity House. The ships are being built to the high technical standards demanded by the GLAs for the exacting operations they conduct in coastal waters.

    Milbrook UK based BWSeaCat has won an order from the Southampton Institute's School of Maritime and Coastal Studies to build a 10m catamaran which will replace the Institute's current training vessel. 

  • Green Pastures for Mustang

    Mustang Marine , which celebrates 20 years of trading this month, has taken over the former Milford Haven Ship Repairers south yard and now operates the largest working slipway on the UK's West Coast. The business now employs some 36 people on a 3.8 acre waterfront site.

  • New Terminal Tugs Romulo and Remo are Ahead of Schedule.

    Two important new terminal tugs are rapidly nearing completion in Spain at the Astilleros Balenciaga Shipyard in Zumaia. To be named Romulo and Remo , the tugs are to join the fleet of Remolcadores de Puerto y Altura SA - 'Repasa' at Tarragona. 

  • Svitzer Reinforce Their Milford Haven Tug Fleet

    Svitzer Marine Ltd has significantly reinforced their fleet of tanker handling tugs at Milford Haven with the arrival of the new Svitzer Milford . The tug, the first of a new series to be deployed to a British port, arrived during the first week of November and entered service after a few days of crew training.
