'Redeemer' Adds Diving to Activities List
01 Dec 2004
Seeing what at first appears to be a modern sport fisherman with an Effer knuckle boom crane mounted to port amidships makes the viewer wonder how big a fish the crew is after. However, appearances can be deceiving and Falmouth UK based Bay Marine 's 37' vessel Redeemer is in fact a thoughtfully developed multi-purpose workboat which is proving itself with the local commercial marine community.
Bay Marine celebrated its first birthday last month and, as with many young companies, did not have the funds for a new purpose built vessel. By chance, Bay Marine located the Novena onthe internet, a Bruce Roberts designed craft built by a well known Welsh fabrication company for a local owner who used it for family cruising and fishing trips.
The boat's Caterpillar 3116 diesels had only done 500 hours in five years.
A successful trial led Bay Marine to decide the vessel had all the potential to be made into the multi-role vessel they were after. Brought from Cardiff to Falmouth on the back of a lorry last autumn, the boat was berthed in Falmouth Marina and five months of conversion work began. A 4kVA three cylinder Kohler genset providing 240V, 50Hz ring main power throughout the boat was supplied by Western Marine and Power of Plymouth. The vessel was put on the hard for a repaint, the stern was cut out to ease the deployment of divers and ROVs and a diver lift was added.
The craft's 11.5m by 4.5m dimensions provide a stable working platform and a large aft deck has two slightly raised engine hatches forward while an open stern gives free running to sea with a one ton 'A' frame for launch and recovery. When the 'A' frame is not fitted, the electric diver lift can be mounted on the starboard side at the stern.
The Effer crane is mounted with a 650kg winch whose 360º slewing gives full deck coverage.
A Spencer Carter 'P' bracket slave hauler with a drum end and rope sheave is mounted at the starboard forward quarter.
The 270hp Caterpillars drive four bladed fixed pitch propellers supplied by BT Propellers of Teignmouth through Borg Warner hydraulic gearboxes to deliver 20 knots top speed and 15 knots cruising.
The deceptively large wheelhouse provides ample seating and room for dive panels or hydrographic survey equipment. A Furuno navigation package was supplied by Marine Electronics of Penryn. The satellite compass has a number of spare ports which can be interfaced with hydro survey equipment.
Renamed Redeemer , Bay Marine's transformed workboat is now operating under MCA Category 2, licensed to work up to 60 miles from safe haven on a range of activities which may still include charter fishing but now extends to commercial or leisure diving, hydrographic survey, ROV deployment, marine conservation works, personnel transfers and offshore ship supply amongst many others.
