Swathe Bathymetry Seminar

The Southampton Institute is to stage a third Swathe Bathymetry seminar on multibeam and other sounding methods, at its Sir James Matthews Conference Centre from 18-19 January.

It aims to bring together views and practical experiences of manufacturers, contractors and client organisations on use of Swathe Bathymetry (including LIDAR) and precision GPS technology for delivery of quality data. Quality assurance and data processing issues will also be discussed and results from the first survey under the UK Civil Hydrography Programme involving multibeam technology will be presented.

Specific topics comprise Interferometric Sonar, Hawkeye LIDAR Surveys, Beam-forming MBES, Data Processing & QC, Emergence of Multibeam Technology in UK Government Hydrography, and Swathe Bathymetry for a Tectonic Survey in Greek Waters. Speakers include representatives of Admiralty Coastal Surveys, Caris, Fathoms, Gardline Geosurvey, GeoAcoustic, Marine Institute of Ireland, Reson, Southampton Oceanography Centre and the UK Hydrographic Office.

Proceedings will be followed by a free one-day seabed classification tutorial jointly hosted by Atlantas Marine and Quester Tangent.

Aside from practical tuition, it will look at all stages of classification of multibeam and sidescan data with the promise of a free 30-day software license to laptop-armed enthusiasts.

Exclusive of accommodation, cost of the seminar proper is £275 for both days or £175 for a single day. Further details from: Business Initiative Unit, Southampton Institute, East Park Terrace, Southampton SO14 0RD, UK (Telephone: 023 8031 9178 Email: ft. biu@solent. ac. uk).
