  • RNLI Lifeboat Woman Awarded Gallantry Medal

    The RNLI has announced that Porthcawl helmsman Aileen Jones is to be awarded the Institution's Bronze Medal for Gallantry for her part in the rescue of two fishermen on August 24, 2004. Aileen is the first lifeboat woman in 116 years to be given such an accolade, the last medal awarded to a woman crew member was in 1888. 

  • Port of Koper Coping Better

    The Slovenian Port of Koper , which receives some 2,000 ship calls per year, has installed a Transas AIS Network System procured by the Slovenian Maritime Directorate . The new system covers the whole of the Slovenian coastline and helps operators to observe the traffic situation not only within the port area but across the country's entire territorial waters as well. 

  • Daewoo Deal Done in Rotterdam

    Two British companies travelled to Rotterdam Maritime last month to complete the sale of two Daewoo marine engines by South Devon based WaterMota Ltd to Williams Marine & Port Services Ltd ofPembroke Port in Wales. The eight cylinder, 15 litre Daewoo V158TIH engines will re-power Williams' 19m Multi-cat type vessel Seahorse as part of a complete refit for the workboat.

  • UMC Goes Into Hull Cleaning

    UMC International Plc have decided to launch a range of hull cleaning equipment based on the huge global interest shown in their Mini Pamper hull cleaning machine, which features technology adapted to underwater cleaning. Its advanced cleaning mechanism has scrub pressure control, allowing the diver to ensure only the required amount of pressure is used based on the marine fouling encountered and the type of paint. 

  • Barcelona Sees Shortsea Future

    The Spanish Port of Barcelona is focusing on growing shortsea traffic and has allocated part of its ongoing expansion for a dedicated terminal to accommodate the sector. Port authority chairman Joaquim Coello told a recent shortsea conference in Barcelona that the creation of new port capacity, alongside economic and strategic considerations such as cooperation and training, enabled him to forsee the creation of a dedicated shortsea terminal.

    Abeking & Rasmussen hasreported it is in 'intensive negotiations' about further repeat orders for small SWATH pilot tenders after delivering the 25.65m long Wangeroog to German waterway and shipping administration (WSV) authorities. 

  • QE2's Longest Voyage

    In recently completing 35 years, six months and three days in service, Cunard 's Queen Elizabeth 2 has become the longest serving liner in the company's history, surpassing the Aquitania . The vessel has covered more than 5 million nautical miles, equivalent to sailing around the world 230 times, and has carried nearly 3 million passengers. Costing £29 million to build in the 1960s, Cunard has subsequently spent 15 times that amount on refits, refurbishing and re-engining a vessel which is expected to remain in service for many more years.

  • Ports Hunger for Feeders

    A new report from Netherlands based shipping consultancy Dynamar says the shortsea feeder trade is an important part of an integral port network. Efficient feeder links act as a catalyst to the growth of containerisation and hence play an important role in growing business volumes. Transhipment cargo, in addition to hinterland cargo, is attractive to mainline carriers and thus promotes port use overall. 

  • Rail Rockets from Thamesport

    Thamesport (London) Ltd has introduced a fourth train operating company, Direct Rail Services , which will operate a full daily service to Daventry from the Medway based container port. 

  • MARPOL Revisions Adopted

    Revised regulations to prevent marine pollution by ships carrying oil or chemicals have been adopted by the Marine Environment Protection Committee of the IMO .The revised MARPOL Annex 1 isexpected to enter force on 1 January 2007, incorporated the various amendments adopted since MARPOL entered into force in 1983. These include the phasing in of double hull tankers, a separation of construction and equipment provisions from operational requirements, and clear distinction between requirements for newbuilds and existing vessels.

  • Port of London Raises Historic Elizabethan Remains

    The Port of London Authority (PLA) has successfully recovered significant sections of a late 16th Century vessel from the Thames Estuary. Working closely with experts from Wessex Archaeology the Marine Services Department of the PLA has raised a portion of the bow, part of the side of the Tudor vessel and a number of artefacts. 

  • Fast Travel to London Boat Show

    With the London Boat Show returning to the ExCel Exhibition Centre on 6-16 January, visitors wishing to get into a maritime mood en-route can travel to the event by high speed catamaran and shuttle coach from six central London piers. The ExCel Express , operated by Thames Clippers, will be boarding passengers at Waterloo, Savoy, Blackfriars, Bankside, London Bridge and St Katharine's Dock Piers. 

  • 2nd Sea and Water Conference

    The second annual Sea and Water Conference will be held in Hull UK on 1 March 2005. The event will include a full day's conference, a dinner and a tour of local water freight facilities. Agreement has been reached for a senior government minister to deliver the keynote speech for an event sponsored by Associated British Ports and the Humber Trade Zone.
