'Buddy' for Waterways Clearance

The River Tyne Clean-Up Project , led by the Port of Tyne in the UK, have selected the new generation Buddy workboat from the Liverpool Water Witch Marine & Engineering Company to provide a supporting role in their debris clearing operation.

The new vessel, which will be operational by the end of this month, will facilitate significant environmental improvements on the River Tyne.

The innovative new range of Buddy workboats features a unique interchangeable skip system which enable the performance of a wide variety of tasks. With the appropriate pod in place, water cleaning, refuse collection, weed clearing, load carrying, pumping out, or emergency response can be carried out with maximum efficiency. Skimmers can be deployed between the catamaran hulls for oil spill response, the deck boards can be configured to create a moon pool and combined storage/working area for diving support, and a 'A' frame lifting system can be positioned between the hulls with a chain or electric winch for mooring/cable servicing.

The craft are constructed from 5083 marine grade aluminium.

The Buddy was designed primarily for removing floating debris and litter, with a mesh collection basket that sits between the hulls and filters debris from the water as it motors along. Flat sides and wheel fenders make it possible to run the craft along dock walls. Inward flared bows force all the debris in the boat's path into the collection basket. When the basket is full it is lifted from the catamaran by hoist and tipped into a refuse skip. The innovative lifting and skip system, which enables fully mechanised transfer without manual handling, is the key element of the Buddy design.
