Solent Surveys Completed
01 Feb 2004
High-resolution swathe, sidescan sonar and magnetometer surveys in the Solent between the Isle of Wight and Hampshire have been successfully completed by Gardline Environmental on behalf of Southern Water and its consultants, J P Kenny . The Great Yarmouth company was retained to identify and map recent damage to a water supply pipeline thought to have been caused by a vessel dragging its anchor.
An additional aim of the hastily- convened two-week venture, which also included ROV inspection operations, was to detect and map existing routes of several telecom, electrical and water utilities to enable establishment of an anchor plan prior to arrival of a repair barge.
Survey equipment resources included a Simrad EM 3000 multibeam unit and an RTK (real-time kinematic) GPS positioning system for production of high quality data charts, allowing safe anchoring of the repair barge.
Gardline Environmental adds that the resulting swathe data also led to precision location of existing routes, with partially exposed telecom cables being detected in a complicated mega-rippled seabed across much of the survey area.
