Chinese Lifeboats Cross to Europe
01 Feb 2004
In a recent visit to China, where they lectured on fast rescue at Shanghai Maritime University , researchers from Sweden's Landsort Maritime visited an emerging cluster of lifeboat and rescue boat builders in the city of Jiangyin, some 150km up the Yangtze River.
Five manufacturers mainly sprung from the Jiangyin Xinjiang FRP Boat Factory have developed the capability to deliver 1,300 craft per year, some of which are finding their way to European distributors.
The largest company is Jiangyin Xinjiang, which has a range of some 50 models and can produce up to 800 lifeboats and rescue craft per year. The manufacturers are ISO 9001 or 9002 certified, and their in-house designed products are approved to global and European Type procedures. The Xinjiang plant houses a 10m deep water test pool and a 30m high test rig for freefall boats.
At least two of these manufacturers have European distributors. Jiangyin Xinjiang's products are distributed in Europe by Norwegian Maritime Equipment and Jiangyin Norsafe, a joint venture between Norwegian Norsafe, Singapore-based SBI and the local Chinese manufacturer, has Norsafe as its distributor.
