Van Oord Deepens Entry Channel in South Korea

Van Oord in the Netherlands has been awarded contracts for the deepening of the entry channel to the Pusan New Port and for the delivery of sand for a nearby land reclamation project.

The client for the project is the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, and work was due to start in May and be completed in June. Some two million cubic metres of silt will be dredged and consolidated in specially built basins. Van Oord will deploy trailing suction hopper dredger HAM 318 .Van Oord's second contract, to deliver sand for Pusan New Port, was awarded by Busan Urban Development Corporation, the main contractor being Pohang Steel Corporation (POSCO).

Dredging work under this contract was due to start in early June 2004 and be completed in October.

The aim of project is the reclamation of land to expand the city. In total some four million m 3of sand will be reclaimed, having been dredged at a depth of 80m and 100km from the reclamation area.
