Spain and Sweden Upgrade VTS

La Coruna's existing VTS was installed by Norcontrol IT in 1993 and is based on two VOC 5000 workstations and a remote radar site with both one X-band and one A-band radar. This was expanded in 2000 with a local radar, in addition to an upgrade of the communication between the remote site and the control centre.

In addition to the integration of the VTMIS 5060, the latest upgrade will also include replacement of the two VOC 5000 workstations, three of Norcontrol IT's new VET 5070 advanced extractor and tracking systems, new VLR 5070 logging and replay software and the latest WIS 5060 system integration software. Radars will also be replaced by Norcontrol IT's local partner Tecosa.

New direction finding and meteorological sensors will also be integrated with the system.

Norcontrol IT has also been awarded a major new VTS installation contract by the Swedish Maritime Administration to supply extensive upgrades to the Swedish West Coast VTS, including replacement of the existing Norcontrol VTS 5000 system of Gothenburg Port.

The new VTS system will be operational by next January at the latest. Built into the contract is also a future expansion of the system to include maritime traffic data from the east coast of Sweden.

The new VTS centre at Gothenburg will utilise Norcontrol IT's VTMIS 5060 with information gained from seven radar sites along the Swedish west coast in addition to AIS information. Norcontrol IT will supply and install six operator workstations to form the core of the operations room.

Several bespoke sub-systems have also been specified.

Gothenburg will become the Traffic Control Centre for the entire Swedish west coast VTS area and Norcontrol IT's systems will be used to increase efficiency throughout the service. An improved situational awareness will be utilised in day to day operations and also to help co-ordinate Search and Rescue as well as pollution prevention and containment activities.
