Clean Power for China Tourist Boats

Environmental features were decisive in the minds of Chinese authorities who chose Volvo Penta marine diesel engines to power newbuild tourist boats which will be deployed on the Thousand Island Lake, part of the country's extensive inland lake system. Located some 500 km southwest of Shanghai, it is an area of natural beauty which receives heavy tourist and vessel passenger traffic whilst also striving to remain an important freshwater reserve.
In order to safeguard the high standards of water quality in Thousand Island Lake while simultaneously dealing with rising tourist levels, authorities were intent on finding the most environmentally friendly engine option for their new boat. The decision went to Volvo Penta, which has recently introduced a new range of medium and heavy duty commercial marine diesels in China. The emission levels for these 5 and 7 litre engines is up to 4 times lower than many of the domestic alternatives.
The first of the 30m boats, which displace 80 tonnes and will carry 80 passengers at 10 knots, were delivered in April equipped with 6 cylinder, 7 litre Volvo Penta D7A T engines which produce 129kW at 2,300rpm.
Volvo Penta's engine sales in China increased dramatically in the first quarter of this year, largely due to high demand for diesel powered gensets.
Due to power shortages in the country, demand for such units is high.
