Find a Safehaven at seawork
01 Jun 2004
A regular seawork exhibitor, Ireland's Safehaven Marine has recently delivered the 30th Interceptor model it has built but which is the first ever 'short cabin' Commercial 42 version.
The craft was built for owner Peter Munro of Munro Fisheries on Guernsey, who had observed the successful operation and exceptional sea keeping of fellow skipper Richard Seager's Interceptor 38 out of the same home port since 2000.
The strikingly orange Nemo isno small fish and will be used as a crab potting vessel operating far offshore. Munro expects to reduce the sailing time to his favourite ground from seven hours to three hours compared to his other vessel for a significantly shorter working day.
Nemo iscapable of handling 40 pots at a time and has a large aft cockpit of over 300ft 2with a completely flush deck.
Power is provided by a fully electronic 12 litre Caterpillar C12 diesel engine matched to a twin Disc 5114A Quick Shift gearbox rated for heavy commercial use and controlled by Twin Disc's own electronic shifter which incorporates an adjustable trolling valve. On sea trials, the 10,100kg Nemo achieved 27 knots. With twin 100 gallon auxiliary tanks augmenting a 300 gallon main tank, Nemo has a 1,000 mile range at displacement speed and over 600 miles at 16 knots.
During trials Nemo further validated Safehaven's nearlegendary reputation for sea keeping, maintaining 15 knots into the seas over 10ft waves driven by a Force 8 gale and managing 20 knots on all angles running with the seas.
