Noble Newbuild Honoured by Princess
01 Jun 2004
The number 128 must be lucky for Ayrshire based boatbuilders Alexander Noble & Sons as the naming ceremony for their 128th and most recent newbuild was presided over by HRH Princess Anne, The Princess Royal. HRH initiated the working life of the mussel dredger Gizzen Briggs , built for Highland Fresh Mussels Ltd which will operate it from Tain on mussel beds in the Dornoch Firth.
The vessel will fish mostly close to shore in shallow water and land to a tidal berth. The owners specified a very manoeuvrable, shallow drafted boat which would give the highest possible load carrying weight to hull immersion ratio, a specification which ruled out catamarans.
Designer Alasdair Salmon of A G Salmon and Company, who has produced designs for many steel and aluminium workboats, came up with plans for a single chine hull.
All plate for the steel-built hull was cut and shaped in-house by Alexander Noble & Sons.
Gizzen Briggs measures 13m LOA on a beam of 5.8m and a moulded depth of 1.5m. As a day boat, there was no need for a hold so a full width engine room extends more than half the length of the craft.
In that engine room twin Ford Mermaid engines, each delivering 100kW at 2,600rpm, are matched to Newage PRM 3:1 reduction gearboxes to drive 700mm diameter four bladed propellers, enabling Gizzen Briggs to reach 7.5 knots during sea trials. The fore end of each engine provides a direct drive for load sensing hydraulic pumps which feed into the vessel's hydraulic ring main in a system designed to overcome the restricted power dictated by license requirements.
The automated mussel dredging operations are centred on two outboard facing dredgers mounted aft on a central gantry. Two speed, three tonne split trawl winches are fitted with both local and central electric controls.
