Versatile Patrol Boats for Danish Navy
01 Jun 2004
In little more than a year, Storebro Bruks AB has transformed an order from the Danish Navy for four high speed patrol boats of their SRC 90 E design into four vessels delivered. Trials have gone according to plan, including negotiating ice up to 5cm thick. As no faults were found, the vessels have been approved by the satisfied customer.
The high speed SRC 90 E patrol boat was designed and developed by the Swedish Defence Material Administration in close co-operation with the Swedish Amphibious Corps and Storebro Bruks. It is built in a composite laminate with carbon fibre and a vinyl ester resin for maximum strength at low weight. The compact measurements of the 12m LOA craft and its waterjet propulsion system equip it to operate in narrow and shallow waters.
The version of the SRC 90 E delivered to the Danish Navy will operate from a Flexible Support mother ship. The Danish Navy has two such vessels and each will carry two of the Storebro Bruks boats on a special cargo deck, from where they will be launched aft by crane. They will be used to transport personnel and cargo, survey fairways and harbours, conduct search and rescue missions as well as military surveillance and, if required, to transport wounded personnel.
In this basic configuration it will carry a driver and navigator plus 10 seated personnel or four stretchers, or combinations of seats and stretchers.
The Danish Navy boats are powered by a single 14 litre V8 Scania marine diesel rated at up to 800hp driving through a Rolls-Royce Kamewa waterjet.
The SRC 90 E is a well proven design and Storebro Bruks has now built 60 such units for delivery within Sweden as well as to Norway, Lithuania and China. Many have found non-military uses ranging from patrol or search and rescue craft to water taxis.
