Dredging Armour Does Dubai

Leicester UK based welding and metal fabrication specialists AceArc have developed heavy duty armour which is protecting cutter suction dredgers engaged in creating the world's largest two man made islands off the coast of Dubai. The Ace700/700S saltwater wearplate manufactured by AceArc isbeing used by the company's Dutch partner Breeman & van Seventer BV to make suction heads and mouths and complete wear liners for dredging equipment.

Damen Dredging Equipment (formerly De Groot Nijkerk ) has delivered a knock-down package for a Type CZ600 monohull cutter suction dredger to Middle East dredging and reclamation contractor Gulf Cobla LLC . The Khaleej Bay was designed in close cooperation with the owners, who also supervised the building at the Abu Dhabi Shipbuilding Co .

'Oranje' Ready for Boom

Oranje , the second of two new 16,000m3 capacity trailing suction hopper dredgers for Dutch dredging giant Royal Boskalis Westminster , was launched recently at the Merwede Shipyard at Hardinxveld-Giessendam in the Netherlands. The sister ship Prins der Nederlanden was launched in August 2003.

Operating on one of three available frequencies in the 300kHz band, the Kongsberg EM 3002 series is designed for detailed waterways and seafloor mapping as well as inspection operations over depths from 0.5m to 150m.

ISU Welcomes Release

The International Salvage Union (ISU) has welcomed the release from detention in Pakistan of Tsavliris Salvage Master Nicolas Pappas and members of the crew of the tanker Tasman Spirit , which had run aground and broken up in the approaches to the Port of Karachi . The ISU called upon Spain to follow the example set by Pakistan and repatriate Captain Mangouras, Master of the tanker Prestige , who remains unable to leave Spain more than two years after the sinking of his vessel off the Spanish coast.

Earlier this year Westfalia Separator launched its new WTC 2 high speed centrifuge for separating oil from bilge water down to 5ppm. The new machine can treat up to 1m 3/hr of oily water and is well suited for small vessel applications such as port and harbour workboats.

London law firm Lawrence Graham says shipping is focusing on complying with ISPS requirements while another soon to be enforced Convention, which will have major ramifications for all aspects of shipping, goes largely unnoticed. Writing in the latest issue of Shipping Lawgram , the firm's shipping partner Imogen Rumbold says the Hazardous and Noxious Substances Convention 1996 is likely to come into force in the next two years.

Busy Days at Dublin Port

The largest container ship ever to be handled in an Irish port called at Marine Terminals in Dublin Port last month after the facility had received a 23m make-over. The 2,450 teu MSC Peggy , at 208m LOA and drawing 9m, was comfortably accommodated at Marine Terminals Limited 's(MTL) 570m extended quay, which has an increased minimum depth of up to 10.2m at all states of the tide. The Mersey Docks Group operated terminal has another 130m of berthing space with a minimum depth of 8.5m.

High Proof Heavy Water

Lifting equipment on board the British registered, Sealion Shipping dive support vessel Toisa Polaris was given a clean bill of health from Water Weights recently after completion of the proof load testing of its lifeboats and cranes. Four lifeboats, giving cover to 104 personnel, and a 250 tonne offshore crane were proof load tested.
