Dredging Armour Does Dubai

Leicester UK based welding and metal fabrication specialists AceArc have developed heavy duty armour which is protecting cutter suction dredgers engaged in creating the world's largest two man made islands off the coast of Dubai. The Ace700/700S saltwater wearplate manufactured by AceArc isbeing used by the company's Dutch partner Breeman & van Seventer BV to make suction heads and mouths and complete wear liners for dredging equipment.

The Ace 700/700S can be fitted to numerous applications to provide greater resilience and ease of repair. Unlike other plates which must be replaced when damaged or worn, the AceArc plate can be re-welded quickly and easily. It comprises a chromium carbide overlay material fused to a stainless steel backing plate.

During the computer controlled manufacturing process a homogenous layer is formed between the welded surface and the backing plate, creating a very strong metallurgical bond. The result is an extremely abrasion resistant wearplate with a typical hardness of 58 - 62RC.

To ensure optimum high-wear resistance, chrome levels combined with the size and distribution of the carbide content are carefully formulated to achieve material compositions providing maximum wear life.

Various grades of chromium carbide plate are manufactured to meet the most demanding applications, including saltwater corrosion, heavy abrasion, high temperatures and chemical attack.

The two 'Palms' under construction at Jumeirah and Jebel Ali are palm tree shaped complexes of reclaimed land which will increase Dubai's shoreline by 120km and create a large number of residential, leisure and entertainment opportunities when completed in 2007. A significant cluster of the world's dredging and workboat fleets are engaged in creating the Palms and another similar reclamation in the shape of the relatively spaced continents of 'The World', spread over a sea area of 4 by 6km.
