Mowlem Begins Sandquay Improvement
01 May 2004
Mowlem Civil Engineering , part of international construction and support services group Mowlem Plc , has begun work extending and improving the Sandquay Base in Dartmouth for client VT Integrated Services , part of the VT Group Plc .
The Sandquay Base serves as the repair facility for all the teaching vessels operated by Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, and the upgrades will greatly improve the existing facility offering further benefits to the naval cadets at the college.
Mowlem is currently obtaining planning permission from South Hams District Council (SHDC) and also a Marine Consent Licence from the Environment Agency.
The £1m project is expected to commence at the end of May and a wide scope of works will be involved.
An extension is to be built to an Engineering Workshop on the site and modifications made to the main workshop to create a new boat repair facility requiring 7m high access doors.
In addition, repairs will be carried out on the main concrete slipway and an extension to a concrete jetty will be constructed on steel tubular piles with an overall size of 40m x 20m.
This extension will house a new crane, which will be used to lift boats of up to 70 tonnes into the new repair facility.
Finally, the project will involve the construction of a new two-storey teaching block to seat 48 naval cadets. This will involve the demolition of an existing boathouse and the construction of a retaining wall within an old tidal slipway. The contract is due for completion at the end of this year.
