Redevelopment works at MTL included a trebling of container storage capacity from 2,000 teus to 6,500 teus and installation of new ship to shore and container yard cranes.

Meanwhile, the Babtie Group consultancy has secured a three year commission to provide engineering and environmental services to Dublin Port Company.

The Irish Port of the Year in 2003 handles almost half of Ireland's imports and exports, including 80% of Ireland's ro-ro traffic.

The commission to Babtie Rivers and Marine, and joint venture partner EG Pettit and Company, will encompass capital and maintenance works for the marine facilities and port estate. It will also involve implementation of strategic projects, such as assisting the port in developing an environmental plan to help achieve ISO 9001 accreditation.

The commission is pioneering in its use of partnering and the New Engineering Contract (NEC), which promotes team working between all parties involved in the construction process. Most contracts in Ireland are still procured traditionally and Dublin Port Company has become the first port to outsource engineering and environmental services in this way.

Babtie is currently selecting contractors which are willing to work under the NEC to complete the partnering loop and deliver best value for Dublin Port Company.
