Hydrographic Survey by David Goodfellow

'Xplorer' Returns from Wreck Surveys

The hydrographic survey vessel Xplorer , operated by Portsmouth UK based Sea-Trax , has just completed a six month contract surveying designated protected wreck sites between Northern Ireland and Falmouth.

Xplorer was purpose-built as an MCA category 2 Survey vessel.

Completed in 2002 by Gemini Workboats, Xplorer is a catamaran purpose built as an MCA category 2 survey vessel.

Well equipped for survey and diving support work, the craft is fitted with twin generators enabling sub-bottom profiling with boomers whilst keeping the electrical surge often associated with such work away from the computer power supply. An inverter is fitted as back-up and a hydraulic deck crane provides versatility for equipment loading.

Cruising at 18 to 20 knots and a top speed of 25 knots allows Xplorer to reach survey areas rapidly, while three cabins provide accommodation for four persons. Sea-Trax and Xplorer had a busy start to the year also, conducting multi-beam surveys, sub-bottom profiling, sidescans, and servicing wave recorder buoys along the UK south coast.
