    Norwegian lifeboat and davit specialist Schat-Harding hasadvanced its strategy to expand market share with cargo ships built at Asian yards by taking over the lifeboat manufacturing plant and product range of China's Beiyang Boatbuilding Co . The lifeboat factory at Qingdao currently produces about 100 boats per year from a range of five models.

    New software has been launched by Syncrolift Inc , part of the Rolls-Royce naval marine business in the USA that has installed 226 of its Syncrolift lifting platform systems worldwide. They provide an elevator mechanism to lift a large range of marine vessels from the water, transfer them to dry maintenance facilities, and lower them back in again.

    The UK Port of Felixstowe took delivery of its latest Ship to Shore Gantry Crane (SSGC) late last month when the second of an order of three SSCGs arrived from China. 

  • 'Thunder Horse' Gets to Texas PDQ

    Dutch heavy transport shipping company Dockwise further advanced the market for moving ultra-large and heavy items by sea when it delivered the largest semi-submersible Production & Drilling Quarters (PDQ) ever built to Texas last month.

    TTS Marine Cranes ASA of Norway launched a new product at SMM which promises to make mooring operations safer and more cost effective. The ship mounted TTS Winch Bollard mooring system can replace mooring winches, capstan, wrapping drums and bollard normally used for mooring.

    Birmingham based lifting equipment specialist Lloyds British Testing plc has acquired the Swansea engineering business Rumney Crane , which provides lifting solutions for ports and harbours. Rumney is to be integrated into Lloyds British Testing and will be called Lloyds Rumney Crane Division .

    Simrad of Norway has launched a new range of electronic chart systems, the CS50 and CS60 Series, designed for vessels operating on fixed routes such as Ro-Ro ferries and local supply craft; fast update rates also make them ideal for high-speed craft as well as survey, coastal and river vessels, the company adds.

  • Autotracker's Successful Trials

    Subsea 7's Integrated Remote Technologies Division in Aberdeen has successfully completed a second series of in-water trials of its Geosub AUV fitted with a custom-built Autotracker module for highspeed, low-altitude pipeline inspection. Sponsored by BP, the trials were carried out in Scapa Flow, Orkney following earlier ones in Peterhead Bay.

  • Ports and Harbours Will Become the First Line of Defence

    PORTS need to take much more responsibility for security, according to Pradeep Chawla of Anglo-Eastern Ship Management Ltd . Speaking at the recent International Transport Intermediaries Club Forum (ITIC), Chawla spoke out on behalf of seafarers saying that under the ISPS Code they had become the first line of defence in the fight against terrorism. 'Is this the job of the seafarer? he asked.

  • Mersey Docks Interim Results

    Mersey Docks and Harbour Company The has posted a healthy 5.9% boost in underlying pre-tax profit on a turnover up by 6.9% in its interim results for the first half of 2004. Continuing growth in container traffic in both Liverpool and Dublin is evident and ro-ro prospects are strengthening, with the likelihood of additional shipping capacity before the end of this year and in 2005. The outlook remains positive and progress is expected in all operating divisions in the second half of this year, together with further significant property disposals.

Still in its first year of operation, Cunard 's flagship luxury liner came up against its closest call thus far on the maiden visit to Norway. It was necessary to sail under the Askoy Suspension Bridge, the largest bridge of its type in the country, and initial estimates had suggested that clearance for the vessel's funnel would be only one metre.

  • Marseilles Maintains Growth

    Container handling growth at the French Port of Marseilles was up by 10% in the eight months to the end of August, with a throughput of 608,000 TEU. East-west volumes through Fos rose 9% to 388,000 TEU while terminals handling north-south trades improved by 11% to 220,000 TEU. Container tonnage rose by 13% to top six million ton and underpin an 8% rise in general cargo.

    Coventry UK based Newage Transmissions ' first production StepDrive unit has been installed in a 25ft Lema Clon motor boat based at Brixham. 

  • Summer Debut for New Fast Water Jet

    First deliveries took place recently of a new model in Italian manufacturer Castoldi's HC (Hydraulic Clutch) range of water jet drives. The Turbodrive 238 - HC weighs only 110 kg and can be matched to engines up to 420hp, making it suitable for single or twin unit installation in boats in the 6m to 10m range with displacements of from 2 to 6 tonnes. 

  • Flexible Friend Knocks Noise

    Yorkshire UK based flexible coupling manufacturer Centa Transmissions Limited had to overcome a significant gearbox location problem when they were asked to substantially reduce noise and vibration from the transmission of Sea Shepherd , the new 15.25m pilot launch for Aberdeen Harbour Board . 

  • Bravo for Fast Ferries

    The Bravo engine series, the result of co-operation between Caterpillar and Spain's Izar Propulsion and Energy Motores , has made the leap from naval to commercial vessel installation with a contract for four Izar Bravo 18 propulsion engines to be installed in a fast ferry that will operate in Greece. 

  • RENK Gears Handle 20,000 RPM

    Germany's RENK Aktiengesellschaft has won a contract with America's Pratt & Whitney Power Systems toprovide reduction gears for six Royal Norwegian Navy Skjold class patrol boats. The carbon fibre SES type catamarans are being built at the Umoe Mandal yard in Norway.

    MAN B&W Diesel A/S has tested and supplied a package consisting of two 8L21/31 and two 6L21/31 gensets which will power an advanced diesel electric research vessel for the State Ministry of Education & Science of MecklenburgVorpommern in Germany.

  • Boat Show Debut for Common Rail MTUs

    MTU staged the UK debut of its new 2000 Common Rail marine engines at the Southampton Boat Show. UK yacht builders have already placed orders for the new models and delivery was expected to start last month. In addition to yachts, the first areas of application for the new 2000 Common Rail engines are patrol boats and fast commercial craft such as fast ferries. 

  • Volvo Penta Power Surge in Hamburg

    Volvo Penta was in expansive form at the SMM Exhibition inHamburg last month, where it launched no fewer than four new engines. 

  • Scania Powers Down for SMM

    Scania has responded to customer feedback by extending the power range of its new 12 litre marine engine downwards to a version producing 300hp at 1,800rpm, expanding applicability for workboat installations. The new DI12M EMS, which was launched this summer at seawork2004, was featured on Scania's stand at SMM in Hamburg last month in a revised range which also extends upwards to 650hp at 2,200rpm. 

  • Multi-Fuel Outboard Seen First at seawork2004

    E P Barrus Ltd chose seawork 2004 as venue for the debut of the world’s first production direct fuel injected outboard engine for the UK Ministry of Defence that is capable of running on a multitude of NATO fuels.

    The first two of ten innovative platform supply vessels have gone to work in the Gulf of Mexico, deploying diesel electric propulsion systems which provide superior performance in the dynamic positioning (DP) mode and maximise design efficiency by eliminating the need for long shafts and reduction gears.

  • Even Leavin' for Rotterdam Maritime

    The 12th Rotterdam Maritime trade show, which takes place this year at the Ahoy Rotterdam exhibition and conference centre on 16-20 November, will be the final presentation of the event in its current format. As detailed elsewhere in this issue, Ahoy ECES purchased the Europort event from Amsterdam RAI last month and beginning in November 2005, the two events will be combined in odd years at the Ahoy Rotterdam, alternating with SMM inHamburg in even years.

  • Adsteam Order First Compact Damen ASD 2411 Tugs for Use in Europe

    As part of a phased programme to upgrade its fleet in Britain Adsteam has placed an order with Damen Shipyards to build three new ASD 2411 tugs. 

  • Kooren Shipbuilding Take up Rotor Tug Options

    Rotterdam based Kooren Shipbuilding and Trading BV , a subsidiary of Kotug , has exercised their options with the ASL Shipyard Pte Ltd inSingapore to build a further pair of their unique 'Rotor' tugs. Earlier in the year, the company placed an order with the yard for two 28.30m long vessels, with an anticipated bollard pull of over 63 tonnes. 

  • 'Vanguard' declared a Total Loss

    The British coastal tug Vanguard , owned and operated by Mersey based Carmet Tugs Ltd , has been declared a total loss after sinking off the Isle of Skye. 

  • TOWLINES

    The ABR Company Ltd hasannounced that the 19th Tug & Salvage Convention , ITS 2006 , will be held in Rotterdam from 24-28 April 2006. Final arrangements regarding the actual venue still have to be finalised but are expected to be announced shortly. The deadline for the submission of papers for ITS 2006 is 1 March, 2005. 

  • The First of a New Breed From UNV

    The busy Spanish shipyard of Union Naval Valencia SA has delivered the first two tugs of their new UNV 265 SD series. 

  • Smit Take Over Smit Panama and Increases Damen Order

    Smit Harbour Towage has taken delivery of the first of a series of three new shiphandling tugs to be deployed in Panama. The first vessel, appropriately named Smit Panama , is one of two compact stern-drive tugs ordered from Damen Shipyards atGorinchem in April of this year. Shortly after Smit Panama was delivered in August the order was increased by one further vessel.

  • 'No Limit' to Salvor's Convenience

    Wijsmuller Salvage BV of the Netherlands had work come knocking on its door this summer when the brand new inland transport vessel No Limit broke its back in IJmuiden Locks, only half a mile from the salvage contractor's headquarters building at IJmuiden. 

  • SMIT's Successful Summer

    SMIT Salvage completed a series of major salvage operations in the first half of this year, with the work programme including salvage and pollution prevention with the tanker Everton , the righting of the capsized fallpipe vessel Rocknes and the expected completion of salvage operations for the car carrier Tricolor . 

  • Indian Coaster Salvaged at Camber Sands

    A salvage team from Klyne Tugs (Lowestoft) Ltd and Smit Salvage worked for a fortnight to refloat the 2,999grt coaster Maanav Star from a beach at the Sussex UK holiday resort of Camber.
