Halcrow's services will look to promote Pulau Muara Besar as a competitive port in one on the world's largest sea trading routes. The agreement follows a five month feasibility study carried out by Halcrow in 2003.

Due to the growth in high volume global container shipments, the study identified Brunei as a viable and strategic location on the East-West shipping route.

The project will be completed in several stages with a total cost of US$1.7 billion. The first stage will see development of part of the port. Should the project be successful and meet projected expectations the later phases will be instigated. No timings have yet been released.

The BEDB's assistant chief executive, Mr Lim Hong Hin, suggested that 70 per cent of the funding will be obtained from the Brunei government, with the remaining 30 per cent coming from a partner.
