Blue Angels for Research Vessel
01 Oct 2004
MAN B&W Diesel A/S has tested and supplied a package consisting of two 8L21/31 and two 6L21/31 gensets which will power an advanced diesel electric research vessel for the State Ministry of Education & Science of MecklenburgVorpommern in Germany.
The 94.8m LOA vessel Maria S Merian is now under construction at the LurssenKrogerwerft yard at Rendsburg and is scheduled for delivery towards the end of this year.
The engines' delivery and final NOx tests in Denmark were surveyed by Germanischer Lloyd, confirming them as the first in the world delivered in compliance with Germany's rigorous 'Blue Angel' emission standard. All engines from MAN B&W Diesel today comply with IMO rules but Blue Angel standard allows an NOx emission of only 80% of the IMO limits. The L21/31 engines for the Maria S Merian were specially optimised to low NOx emission levels (without any fuel penalty) by optimising the primary process internally in the engine and without any after-treatment of the exhaust gas.
A total main engine output of 5,600 kW will give the vessel a maximum speed of 18 knots and 15 knots cruising. Diesel-electric power is supplied by the four gensets, which are integrated in the propulsion system driving thrusters and a pump jet.
STN Atlas of Hamburg is supplying the electrical equipment for the drive system for two 1,900 kW podded propulsors as well as electrical drive system for a 1,600 kW pump jet plus transformers, generators, the cable network, switchboards and a complete power supply assembly for both the vessel and its scientific operations.
