Multi-Fuel Outboard Seen First at seawork2004

E P Barrus Ltd chose seawork 2004 as venue for the debut of the world’s first production direct fuel injected outboard engine for the UK Ministry of Defence that is capable of running on a multitude of NATO fuels.
Designed and developed by Barrus, the F44 will power the current MoD in service Avon 5.2m MID (Medium Inflatable Boat) and a Zodiac f470 military inflatable. The first batch has already been delivered to the UK MoD.
The project was conceived in January 2003 in response to the UK military’s single fuel policy statement to eliminate the carriage of gasoline on board its vessels. In conjunction with Orbital Engineering, the licensees of the OptiMax direct injection system, Barrus approached the UK MoD with the concept of an outboard that would run on four fuels.
Primarily optimised to run on both naval F44 AVCAT and gasoline, the engine will also run on NATO F34 AVTUR and NATO 76. In addition to the UK MoD, the F44 engine could find applications with other commercial users such as North Sea rescue operators who would benefit from non-gasoline burning outboard engines in their workplace.
