Scania Powers Down for SMM
01 Oct 2004
Scania has responded to customer feedback by extending the power range of its new 12 litre marine engine downwards to a version producing 300hp at 1,800rpm, expanding applicability for workboat installations. The new DI12M EMS, which was launched this summer at seawork2004, was featured on Scania's stand at SMM in Hamburg last month in a revised range which also extends upwards to 650hp at 2,200rpm.
The demand for marine engines that comply with current and future legislation is increasing. As the new DI12 EMS complies with both US Tier 2 and European Stage 3 emission standards, the decision was made to extend the power range to give the customers a wider choice.
At SMM Lennart Hjelte, Senior Vice President and Head of Scania Industrial and Marine Engines said, 'Since the entire range of the new 12 litre marine engines is part of Scania's modular engine range, our customers can choose to have several engines optimised for different power outputs but still able to use the same parts and workshop methods. This is a clear advantage in terms of total operating economy.'
It is Scania's own Engine Management System (EMS) which makes it possible to programme each individual engine to meet a customer's specific demands for characteristics such as engine revs and workload.
This new development for the DI12 EMS range is an electronic system which monitors and processes thousands of pieces of data every second.
It evaluates the information to adjust injection timing and the amount of fuel injected to ensure optimum combustion, ensuring optimised fuel consumption and low emissions under all operating conditions.
