01 Oct 2004
Smit Harbour Towage has taken delivery of the first of a series of three new shiphandling tugs to be deployed in Panama. The first vessel, appropriately named Smit Panama , is one of two compact stern-drive tugs ordered from Damen Shipyards atGorinchem in April of this year. Shortly after Smit Panama was delivered in August the order was increased by one further vessel.
The next vessel Smit Christobal will follow in December of this year and Smit Bilbao in March 2005. All three newbuildings are part of a fleet replacement programme currently in progress at Smit.
Completed in just 17 weeks from the order being placed Smit Panama is the most recent vessel built to the now well-established ASD 2810 design. The new tug is a vessel of 28.75m in length overall with a beam of 10.59m and draft of 4.83m. Two Caterpillar 3516B-TA HD/B diesels, rated at 4626 bhp (total) at 1600rev/ min, to power a pair of Rolls Royce US 205 fully azimuthing propulsion units. This arrangement achieved a bollard pull on trials of 55.9 tonnes towing ahead and 52.6 tonnes astern, with a maximum free running speed in either direction of just over 13 knots.
The main engines are fitted for air-starting and cooled by box coolers fitted with a marine growth prevention system.
Auxiliary equipment includes two Caterpillar powered alternators rated at 105kVA each at 230/240v, 50 Hz.
A combined anchor windlass and towing winch, manufactured by BMT, installed on the foredeck has a line pull of 18 tonnes and brake holding load of 130 tonnes. A BMT single drum winch aft has the same basic specification. In order to give the tug some fire fighting capability a single water/foam monitor is located at bridge deck level. The monitor has a capacity of 600 cu/m/min and is supplied by a Caterpillar powered fire pump.
At the time of writing the Damen Shipyards order book listed a further six ASD Tugs 2810 under construction for various owners around the world.
