City of Helsinki Appeals Against Vuosaari Ruling

The City of Helsinki in Finland says it intends to take appeal against a recent ruling that has brought to a halt dredging work for the huge new Vuosaari port project.
Dredging permits for the project were revoked recently by the Vaasa Administrative Court, which ruled that the dredging work should be halted indefinitely. Much of the material being removed is contaminated.
However the authorities in Helsinki says they plan to take the matter to the Supreme Administrative Court.
The sediments in the area which will eventually become Vuosaari harbour are laden with high levels of TBT, which came from a shipyard which used to operate on the site.
Vuosaari Harbour is due to be operational by 2008. The permit for the dredging work was only issued by the Western Finland Environmental Authority earlier this year.
The permit require that the contaminated top layer of sediment should be dredged with special care and moved to temporary storage area in a nearby site.
