Davits Complete North Sea Jigsaw
01 Sep 2004
After four years of developing the concept, Norwegian davit and boat handling systems manufacturer Vestdavit hassecured the contract to supply all davits to BP's Project Jigsaw , a totally new concept for offshore rescue and recovery operations in the North Sea.
Each Jigsaw region will have 24 hour cover provided by an SAR helicopter and support vessels. For normal operations the RSV acts as the host for rescue craft, deploying them as required. The ARRC support the helicopter and provide cover for man overboard work, assisted by the FRCS.
BP is currently building four regional support vessels (RSVs) which will each carry two Autonomous Rescue and Recovery Craft (ARRCs) and two Fast Rescue Craft (FRCs).
The 93m LOA RSVs will have a recovery area suitable for 300 disaster survivors and rescue craft crew accommodation.
Vestdavit are contracted to deliver eight large two-point davits for the ARRCs and eight single point telescopic davits for the FRCs.
The ARRC davits are fitted with both shock absorbers and a dual winch system which includes individual tensioning and automatic self-levelling.
The davits use fibre rope instead of conventional steel wire and have a lifting capacity of 32 tonnes, which will accommodate the 18.8m ARRCs. Power consumption of each ARRC davit is 226kW.
Davits have now been successfully workshop tested and sent to the shipyard for installation on board the multi-role vessels, Seaguard RSV. The first vessel is due for delivery in the first quarter of next year, when all systems will be further tested in the North Sea working environment.
Subsequent vessels will be delivered at three month intervals.
