Schmitt Purchase Unchains Lloyds Beal

As part of a comprehensive two year realignment, Cardiff based Lloyds Beal Limited , one of Europe's longest established suppliers of anchors and chains, has sold its marine trading interests to Schmitt Anchors & Chaincables BV of Rotterdam.

Due to shifting patterns within the marine marketplace in recent years, Lloyds Beal has been shifting its focus to other business activities, principally materials testing. Business growth saw the company move to larger premises last year, a three acre site housing a sophisticated new test house facility which can perform dynamic fatigue testing up to 500 tons and tensile testing up to 1,500 tons. This is complemented by a fully equipped machine shop for sample preparation and Lloyds Beal's own UKAS approved metallurgy laboratory.

Managing director Lyndon Ward said, 'Our location in Cardiff no longer lends itself to marine equipment supply, whereas it works very well for the provision of materials testing facilities. We have transferred many of the testing rigs formerly used in chain and anchor testing to our new facility and have modified and improved them as part of the relocation process.'

The purchase of the Lloyds Beal marine stock will increase Schmitt's supply capability to over 5,800 tons. Their quayside location in the Port of Rotterdam positions Schmitt to quickly supply materials from a vast inventory to anywhere in the world.
