Waterjets Power Speedy Canadian Patrol Boats

Cheltenham based Ultra Dynamics return for Seawork 2005 fresh from the selection of twin UltraJet 305 waterjets to propel the first of a series of 32ft patrol boats for the Canadian Department of National Defence (DND).

The Canadian DND boats are powered by Volvo D6-310 engines driving UltraJet 305 waterjets.

Abco Industries was successful in their bid for the design and construction of four harbour patrol vessels for the DND.

Two are to be used at the port of Halifax in eastern Canada and two at the western Canada port of Esquimalt in British Columbia. One boat has been delivered to each Canadian coast and Abco is currently working on boats three and four.

The aluminium boats were custom designed and built by Abco and feature 'V' bottoms with chine flats and a 190 transom deadrise. Each boat is powered by twin Volvo D6-3 10 engines driving the UltraJet 305 waterjets for a top speed of 34 knots. During trials off Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, the boats demonstrated excellent sea keeping in a variety of conditions. Manoeuvrability was said to be exceptional, allowing very sharp turns, quick stops, position holding and sideways motion.

Acceleration trials confirmed the thrust available from the UltraJet 305 waterjets.

Abco also built a variation of this design for the Halifax Port Authority last summer.

Similar to the DND boats but with Cummins 370B engines, this craft is capable of reaching nearly 40 knots.
