Reson to Be Cheerful

Southampton UK based hydrographic surveyors Emu Ltd have taken delivery of a Reson SeaBat 8101 multibeam echosounder. The integrated multibeam system is also comprised of Reson PDS2000 data acquisition and processing software, Reson SVP-15 sound velocity probe and a TSS MAHRS attitude and heading sensor.

Salvors Deploy the World's Most Powerful Helicopter

The Tsavliris Group hasdeployed the world's most powerful helicopter for lightering duties in works to free the 25,500dwt bulk carrier Kiperousa , which ran aground off South Africa following flooding in its engine room. The vessel was on a voyage from Gabon and Cameroon to China fully laden with 23,000 tons of logs.

Flexible Power for Newbuild Feeder

Wartsila Corporation has won a contract to supply two Wartsila 46F engines to power an Ice class 1A open top container feeder vessel ordered by Dutch owner Wagenborg Shipping and being built at the Kinderdijk yard of IHCHolland Dredgers BV . The new Wartsila 46F was launched at the SMM marine exhibition in Hamburg last autumn.

Specialist incident response company DV Howells Ltd hasbeen awarded a major contract to store the equipment and run the teams that would be drafted in by the UK government in the event of a serious pollution incident at sea. The firm, which was awarded the contract by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency , will deliver the service over the next five years with its partner, spill respone company Seacor Environmental Services International , part of American company Seacor Holdings .

Third Torpoint Ferry Due This Month

The construction of three new chain driven ferries for the Torpoint Ferry Service in the UK's West Country is on schedule, with two of the vessels already delivered and the third due to be delivered this month. New RNLI Lifeboat Is Fit for The Queen

Her Majesty The Queen looked over the RNLI’s new inshore lifeboat, the Atlantic 85, and met RNLI representatives including volunteer crew at a special maritime theme day at St James’s Palace on Wednesday 20 July. The state of the art lifeboat was the only exhibit on display in the courtyard area of St James’s Palace at the special event hosted by The Queen to recognise Britain’s maritime<$>community.

Over 80% More Power for New Panama Tugs

Eight new tugs to the latest 'Z-Tech' design have been ordered for the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) to boost Canal capacity and provide enhanced shiphandling services. As the number of transits by Panamax size vessels increases, the new more powerful tugs will generate over 80% more bollard pull to assist these larger ships. The new vessels will replace eight tugs of the Canal's current fleet of 24 units. Three of the new tugs are scheduled for delivery in December 2006 and five in January 2008.

A UK Broker has joined the staff of Marcon International Inc , shipbrokers specialising in the worldwide towing and offshore petroleum industries. Martin Coombe, a member of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers , joined an existing team of five brokers at Marcon after leaving the Aberdeen based offshore specialists, Seabrokers AS , where he worked for the past four years as chartering / project broker. Prior to that he worked with George Morrison Shipping in Leith, Edinburgh for three years in several roles that included Liner Agency and S&PBrokerage .

Adsteam Handle First LNG Ship in Medway for 20 Years

Early in July tugs of the Adsteam Medway fleet assisted the liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker Berge Arzew to a new purpose built terminal on the Isle of Grain owned by National Grid Transco . The delivery of this first commissioning cargo was safely completed and is one of the first such LNG shipments to arrive in the UK for many years.

New Wyre Ferry Brings Year Round Service

Since the development of Fleetwood, from around 1830, a ferry has operated across the River Wyre to Knott End on Sea. The early ferries were powered by oar or sail. In 1892 an agreement with the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway resulted in new jetties being constructed on both sides of the river and since that time the service has continued, first with steam powered vessels and more recently diesel launches.

Major Refit Work Returns to Portsmouth

Fleet Support Limited (FSL) has docked the Royal Navy Type 23 Frigate HMS Richmond at the start of an 18 month refit programme. The project is the first refit contract in Portsmouth for 15 years and includes a wide range of work to upgrade the ship and enhance its systems capability.
