Flexible Power for Newbuild Feeder

Wartsila Corporation has won a contract to supply two Wartsila 46F engines to power an Ice class 1A open top container feeder vessel ordered by Dutch owner Wagenborg Shipping and being built at the Kinderdijk yard of IHCHolland Dredgers BV . The new Wartsila 46F was launched at the SMM marine exhibition in Hamburg last autumn.

The 167m feeder will have a 23.7m beam and a draft of 7.7m.

Its hatchless design will ensure rapid turnaround in ports while a 21 knot speed will give short transit times. The vessel is scheduled for delivery in the middle of next year and will be mainly employed in northern European waters.

Wartsila will supply the two main engines and a controllable pitch propeller. The six cylinder Wartsila 46F engines will each deliver a maximum continuous power of 7,500kW at 600rpm and drive the single 5.35m diameter Lips CP propeller through a combining reduction gearbox. The Lips propeller will be equipped with the latest compact E-type hub, resulting in higher efficiency. The twin engine/single CP propeller solution provides flexibility in operation on either one or both main engines to deliver maximised fuel economy over a wide range of ship speeds.
