Rapid Response Rescues Turkish Reservoir

Finland based oil spill response equipment manufacturer the Lamor Corporation understands that effective rapid response can mitigate against environmental damage and reduce clean-up costs dramatically. With that in mind, Lamor has been steadily building inventory at their production facility, thus enhancing their efforts to establish other Environmental Action Centres (EAC) at strategic locations around the world.

The stockpile proved essential when a high pressure oil pipeline burst recently in a remote area of southeast Turkey. The resulting spillage had reached Lake Ataturk, an immense reservoir essential to the local population and their economy as it supplies water for both drinking and irrigation.

Kerem Kemerli of Meke Marine, Lamor's local agent, was contacted. He in turn discussed the situation with Lamor's Eastern European sales manager Curt Larson, who quickly confirmed that two oil spill response vessels were in stock along with standard booms, skimmers, power packs and pumps. As the crisis escalated, Kemerli requested a vessel complete with Lamor Bow Collector for advanced skimming and a power pack to run it.

The Lamor Emergency Response Team (aLERT) went into action. A 7.5m aluminium vessel was prepared for shipping with the bow collector attached and export documentation was also prepared. The challenge of getting the vessel to Turkey in time to be useful was met by Lamor's logistics expert Carola Nordstrom, who lined up an AN-12 air transport in only five hours. Just 17 hours after the order was placed, the vessel arrived at the Diyabakir airport from where it was delivered on to the spill site by truck.

The next morning Lamor's boat specialist Markus Magnuson was on site supervising recovery efforts. The local Oil Spill Commander declared the Lamor boat and bow collector 'the most effective method' for recovering the spilled oil and ordered a second Lamor Bow Collector which was cleverly installed between two barges.

The spill was successfully recovered and the Lake protected by timely and effective dynamic response measures.
