  • P&O Accepts Dubai Takeover Bid

    The P&O ports and ferries group has agreed to a £3.3bn takeover bid from Dubai Ports World (DP World), which is owned by the Dubai government. P&O announced that it had received an unsolicited approach last month, and the ensuing offer of 443 pence per share in cash was higher than analysts had expected. 

  • PLA Awarded PERS

    The Port of London Authority has been awarded the EcoPorts Port Environmental Review System (PERS) certificate in recognition of its work to maintain high environmental standards. PERS is a European standard system designed by ports themselves to assist in complying with recommendations of the Environmental Code of Practice of the ESPO. 

  • 'Matching Marine Propulsion' Workshop

    Ship and boat builders who want to know how best to match ship propulsion components and systems, perhaps avoiding costly mistakes, will take interest in the second international Matching Marine Propulsion Workshop, which starts in Vlaardingen in the Netherlands on 7 February 2006. 

  • More Traffic for HST

    The Simon Group, which operates the Humber Sea Terminal (HST), has signed an agreement with A P Moller-Maersk Group subsidiary Norfolkline BV to supply port and terminal services between HST and Vlaardingen in Holland. 

  • EU Short Sea Focus

    Short sea shipping has been identified as a sector for attention by EU environment commissioner Stavros Dimas. Alongside ship building, Mr Dimas believes new legislation for Europe's maritime industries is necessary under his marine environment strategy aimed at cleaning up Europe's territorial waters by 2021. 

  • Moor Care Needed

    The London P&I Club has warned of the potentially fatal consequences of failing to observe the highest levels of care and attention, on board and ashore, during the mooring and unmooring of ships. In the latest issue of its StopLoss Bulletin, the Club highlights a case in which a vessel leaving a river berth failed to release a mooring line which broke when the current caught the ship, killing a mooring man onshore.

    Marine aftermarket products manufacturer MICAD Marine Specialty Products (MMSP) has launched the website www.MICADSHOP. com to make its range available to boat and ship owners worldwide. A debut product on MICADSHOP is a Valu-Brite 17in monitor with a footprint occupying the same helm space as a 15in monitor. 

  • Kwant Controls' Future

    Dutch nautical instrumentation and control systems specialist Stork-Kwant, which was taken over through a management buy-out in January 2004, has changed its name to Kwant Controls BV with effect from the first day of last month. 

  • New Type Tunnel Thruster Debut

    The first commercial application of a new type of tunnel thruster technology is being deployed on a UT 712 CD anchor handler currently under construction at Aker Yards Soviknes for Olympic Shipping of Norway. 

  • RingProp Cops Award

    RingProp PLC's innovative ringed propeller for outboard motors received Special Mention in the Machinery, Propulsion, Electrical & Mechanical Systems and Fittings category from the international jury for the DAME 2005 Awards handed out at METS in Amsterdam last month. The Jury Report stated, 'The RingProp from RingProp Trading Ltd of the UK has been refined to offer safety and manoeuvrability benefits for specific outboard applications.'

    The Central Dredging Association (CEDA) made a successful transition along with Europort last month when CEDA Dredging Days 2005 was held alongside the newly relocated Europort Maritime exhibition in Rotterdam.

    Historical animosities have been set aside to deliver the EU funded Summeri Project, which unites three major Gulf of Finland maritime training centres as one network capable of both training personnel and responding to regional marine oil pollution events. 

  • New Series for German Sea Rescue Body

    The second in a series of new 10.1 m patrol boats for the German sea rescue service DGzRS has gone into service out of Glowe on the Baltic coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. 

  • Successful River Scheldt Salvage

    Dutch salvage company Multraship, working with Belgian salvor URS, has successfully refloated the 3,758gt chemical tanker Philipp Essberger, which grounded in the River Scheldt near Flushing following a reported engine failure.
