Tugs & Towing by Jack Gaston

Sanmar Spread Their Wings

2005 has been a highly successful year for Turkish tugbuilder and operator Sanmar Denizcilik Ltd. The company, who specialise in building standard tugs based on four different series designs is steadily adding to their customer base, with new clients from around the world, and especially Europe. All four vessels types offered are to well established designs from Robert Allan.

Earlier in the year Sanmar delivered two twin-screw tugs, the 3000bhp Dogancay V and the 2000bhp Sanmar XVII to French operators. Built in 2003 and 2004 respectively, the tugs were originally built to Sanmar's own account and resold in 'as new' condition - as per the company's regular practice.

One of Sanmar's most recent deliveries was the new 'Dogancay class' tug Corvin to the German operator H Schramm of Brunsbuttel, near the southern entrance to the Kiel Canal. Built as the Dogancay X, and christened Corvin, this vessel is the first tug to be constructed in Turkey for German operators and the first with ABS classification to appear under the German flag. The 25.5m long vessel is fitted with two Caterpillar 3516B main engines, each developing 1500bhp at 1800rev/min to turn twin fixed pitch, four blade, propellers, rotating in fixed nozzles. Twin rudders are fitted adjacent to each nozzle affording excellent manoeuvrability in a small vessel with a 40 tonne bollard pull and 13 knot free running speed.

Corvin was built and fitted out to comply with the German Flagstate rules of SEE-BG and BSH, where extra attention has to be given to crew comfort and health and safety. Noise trials showed sound levels as low as 57 decibels in the captain's cabin, 62 decibels in the mess room and 65 decibels in the wheelhouse.

Two more 'Dogancay class' vessels (Dogancay 11 and 12) are scheduled to be delivered to a Turkish owner within 2005, and two Sanmar series tugs (Sanmar 18 and 19) are also under construction for Sanmar's own demanding towage operations in Turkey.

Projects director Mr Ali Gurun stated that: "At the time of writing, all four vessels are scheduled to be put in to service within the next 60 days".

He added: "We will have made eleven tug deliveries within one calendar year - which is a record in Turkey".

The next four deliveries to Lamnalco Group, will include three 'Dogancay' class tugs, specially modified to assist with Lamnalco's Single Point Mooring operations in Nigeria, and one 5500bhp 'Sanmar Eskort' class vessel. The latter will be an ASD tug fitted for shiphandling at oil termionals, escort and fire fighting duties.

Sanmar's list of confirmed orders and newbuildings is also quite impressive. Four 'Sanmar Eskort' ASD tugs will be built, three of which are already scheuled for delivery to Italian operators. Two 'Dogancay' class and two 'Sanmar' class vessels are also on the slipway for various owners. At present seven tugs are expected to be completed in 2006.
