Marine Civils by David Foxwell

Euro Project Addressing Aggregates Issues

A European project called EUMARSAND is being uses to determine the potential effects on the marine environment of aggregates extraction, MJ has learned.

The main aims of the project are to provide an overview of marine aggregates usage, availability and legislation;

review and assess methods for prospecting for licences;

study coastal hydrodynamics and sediment dynamics;

conduct near-field modeling of the impacts of extraction and fat-field modeling of the effects on coastal evolution.

According to the European Marine Sand & Gravel Group (EMSAGG), the partners involved in the project are:

the AZTI Foundation in Spain; School of Ocean and Earth Science, University of Southampton, UK; Renard Centre of Marine Geology in Ghent, Belgium; the Department of Geography and Climatology at the University of Athens; the Marine Science Department at the University of the Aegean; and Maritime Institute Gdansk, in Poland.
