Diesel Power & Propulsion

When Thrust is a Must

Twin UltraJet 305 waterjets propel Garrett Cotter , a new 9.8m patrol boat for the Halifax Port Authority inCanada. Built in aluminium, the rapid response vessel is designed and manufactured by ABCO Industries Limited , also of Nova Scotia, and is powered by twin Cummins 370B diesel engines rated 355bhp at 3,000 rpm and driving via ZF220 transmissions.

The UltraJet 575 waterjet is capable of absorbing input powers up to 1,700 bhp.

During sea trials, the exceptional thrust available from the UltraJet 305 drives put the rapid response craft on plane in seven seconds, took it to 25 knots in 13 seconds, 35 knots in 24 seconds and on to a top speed in excess of 38 knots, demonstrating that thrust does not compromise the high speed sprint capability.

The waterjets are spaced to maximise the boat's manoeuvrability and resistance to yaw and sway forces.

Individual control of the reversing deflectors is with Ultra's hydro-mechanical control system actuated by twin levers at the helm. A Raytheon integrated electronics package is also fitted.

Garrett Cotter will perform patrol, port security, search and rescue, and vessel in distress duties in and around the Port of Halifax.

Responding to customer demand, UltraJet has expanded its product line to include the new UltraJet 575 waterjet, capable of absorbing input powers up to 1,700bhp. Twin UltraJet 575s were chosen by builder Kay Marine Sdn Bhd and owners the Marine Department of Sabah in Malaysia for their new 26.5m aluminium oil spill response vessels.

Each boat is powered by twin Caterpillar 3412E diesel engines rated 1,100bhp at 2,300rpm, each driving an UltraJet 575 steerable waterjet through a Twin Disc MG5145SC reduction gearbox. The combination provides the thrust to push the 97 ton displacement craft to 15 knots and delivers a bollard pull of 9 tons.

The Tanjung Kias and Tanjung Nosong exceeded contracted speed targets during successful trials and are now serving in the Sabah Waters as oil spill response vessels with additional fire fighting duties.
