FuelCom Goes With the Flow
01 Jan 2005
As fuel is the single largest cost of marine diesel ownership, accurate metering is critical.
It also gives a key indicator of engine performance, providing the best method for scheduling maintenance and allowing for compliance to environmental regulations.
On show at the recent SMM Exhibition in Hamburg was the AMOT FuelCom Diesel Fuel Metering System, which provides highly accurate and reliable flow measurement of fuel to diesel engines. Easy to install and maintain in-line, it is designed to keep fuel flowing even if the flowmeter is jammed by supply line debris.
For net flow applications, the system takes a different and innovative approach to solving this measurement problem on large diesel engines, typically comprising two flowmeters, two temperature compensated sensors and an indicator or data logger to provide net rate and total.
A built in inlet flow conditioner is both accurate and gives piping insensitivity. Reliability is ensured by the system having only two moving parts and fully withstanding engine vibrations and pressure pulsations. Other features include fuel temperature measurement, a non-intrusive sensor and pulse-out or serial communications.
AMOT's FuelCom is claimed to be the only metering system calibrated using actual diesel fuel where each flowmeter is calibrated at 84 data points from 10-70ºC over the full flow range.
Reference accuracy as ±1% of net fuel consumption for a 2m (supply/ return) system operating at 4-70ºC.
A choice of flowmeter sizes is offered for a range of engines, typically of 500 to 600hp. For engine manufacturers FuelCom may be used as a tool for warranty and service contracts. Portable and fixed options are available.
