Zhen and the Art of Crane Delivery

With Berth 1 of the Eurogate Container Terminal nearing completion after 18 months of modernisation works, five giant container cranes arrived in the Port of Hamburg last month following an eight week voyage by sea from Shanghai.

The cranes were manufactured by the Shanghai Zhenhua Port Machinery Company (ZPMC) and delivered on board the company's own vessel, the 'ZPMC Zhen'. Each crane weighs in at 1,800dwt and measures some 80m high with the booms down. Eurogate was the first container terminal operator in Europe to use ZPMC cranes and this latest delivery takes the total in the Eurogate - Contship Italia network to 23.

Eurogate's Berth 1 quay wall has been extended forward by 35m and dredged to a depth of 16.2m alongside.

It will be able to handle next generation large containerships as soon as the new cranes are installed and operational.

Modernisation works will then shift to Berths 2 and 3, with the Eurogate Terminal expecting to handle more than 4 million TEU by 2010.
